Indoor Air Quality

What is Indoor Air Quality?

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is a general term that is used to characterize indoor environmental conditions that can impact or influence the building occupant’s health and comfort.

With the advent of conservation of energy and fossil fuels in the 70’s and 80’s the conservation fossil fuels, tighter construction of buildings emerged. During that same period of time modern computer and office technologies developed thus increasing the amount of “white collar” workers and greater productivity demands. These factors have influenced the amount of time people spend indoors, the amount if indoor air contaminants and inversely greater awareness of indoor air quality.

The US EPA writes “In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. Other research indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors”.
